Terms of service

These terms are the agreement between you and The Sage Group ("we") for your use of Rex, the app and the website. By creating an account you accept them.

Who may use Rex

You must be at least 13 years old, and old enough to agree to these terms where you live. You may hold one account, for yourself, and you are responsible for what is done with it. Keep your Apple or Google sign-in secure.

Your content

Your profile, shelves, ratings, reviews and lists are yours. You keep whatever rights you have in them. So that the service can work, you give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, display and distribute that content to other users of Rex as the app's sharing settings describe, for as long as you keep it on the service. The licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies other users have already seen and anything we must keep to meet a legal obligation.

You are responsible for what you post. Do not post anything you do not have the right to post, anything unlawful, anything that harasses, threatens or impersonates another person, or anything meant to game ratings or mislead other readers. We may remove content that breaks these rules, and we may suspend or close an account that does so repeatedly or seriously.

The catalogue and what the app tells you

Information about books and authors comes from publishers, libraries, stores and other public sources. We work to keep it accurate and we do not promise it is. Ratings and reviews are the opinions of the users who wrote them. Answers to a question you ask the app are generated with the help of artificial-intelligence models from the reviews, previews and other texts they cite; they can be wrong, and they are not advice. Which spines the camera recognises depends on the shelf, the light and the phone.

Our rights

Rex, its design, its software and its catalogue as a whole belong to us or to our licensors. We give you a personal, non-transferable licence to use the app for reading and sharing recommendations. You may not copy the catalogue, scrape the service, reverse-engineer the app except where the law allows, or use the service to build a competing one.

Apple's terms

The app is distributed through Apple's App Store under Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement, which applies alongside these terms. Apple is not a party to this agreement, has no responsibility for the app or its content, and will not provide maintenance or support for it; Apple and its subsidiaries may enforce these terms as a third-party beneficiary.

Ending the agreement

You may delete your account at any time from inside the app. We may suspend or close your account if you break these terms, if the law requires it, or if we discontinue the service, in which case we will give reasonable notice where we can. Sections about your content, our rights, disclaimers, liability and governing law survive the end of the agreement.

Disclaimers

Rex is provided as it is and as it is available. To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no warranties about it, express or implied, including that it will be uninterrupted, error-free or fit for any particular purpose.

Liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses arising from your use of the service, and our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim and one hundred US dollars. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or fraud.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and the courts there have jurisdiction over any dispute, except that if you are a consumer in the European Union or the United Kingdom you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live and may bring a claim there.

Changes

We may change these terms. If a change matters, we will say so in the app before it takes effect; continuing to use Rex after that date means you accept it. The date at the top is the date of the current version.
